Danger and warning are distinct sign categories. A danger sign is for an immediate and extreme hazard where the risk of serious injury or death is present if the warning is ignored. A warning sign draws attention to a potential hazard or unsafe condition where the outcome is serious but may be avoided by taking care. Selecting the correct category for the assessed risk is important: using danger for a minor caution reduces the attention paid to genuinely extreme hazards, while using warning for an immediate lethal hazard understates the risk.
