How we manufacture both in‑house
At Sign Portal, both substrates are direct UV printed on our Mimaki JFX200‑2513 EX flatbed printers (2.5 × 1.3 m bed, zoned vacuum) using LED‑cured inks for crisp detail and durable colour. Sheets are then registered and routed to size and shape on our MultiCam SM2412 CNC router for clean edges, corner radii, slots and holes.
Where reflective or specialty films are specified, graphics are produced on our Roland VG‑640 wide‑format printer/cutter and applied to the substrate before routing. This workflow delivers consistent panel sizes and repeatable hole positions across batches.
- Make‑ready: we use steel registration pins and on‑bed fiducials; our camera system checks skew before the first pass.
- Colour control: device‑link ICCs built in‑house; spot colours verified with an X‑Rite spectro; batch records kept for reprints.
- Tooling: single‑flute O‑flute cutters for ACP; 2‑flute carbide aluminium mills for solid aluminium; edges are deburred and hand‑finished.

Technical: coastal environments and fixings
Coastal and industrial atmospheres accelerate corrosion and fastener degradation. Build your installation for the environment:
- Substrate selection: prefer solid aluminium 2.0–3.0 mm for exposed posts and high‑spray zones. ACP performs well set back from direct wave/salt spray (e.g. internal walls, sheltered facades).
- Hardware: use 316 stainless screws/bolts, or sealed aluminium/monel rivets. Pair with EPDM/neoprene washers to seal penetrations.
- Dissimilar metals: isolate aluminium from galvanised steel with nylon washers or isolation pads; apply anti‑galvanic barrier (e.g. zinc chromate or polyurethane primer) where metal‑to‑metal contact is unavoidable.
- Edges and sealants: for ACP, cap or seal exposed edges where wind‑driven rain is severe. For solid aluminium, optional powder coat or 2‑pack clear improves resistance in C4/C5‑M categories (ISO 12944).
- Hole sizing: oversize by 0.5–1.0 mm to accommodate thermal movement; deburr to prevent stress risers.
- Fixing density: space fixings 300–450 mm around the perimeter for panels ≥600 × 450 mm; add central fixings on spans >800 mm.
- Seal penetrations: bed washers on a thin bead of neutral‑cure silicone or polyurethane sealant; do not over‑torque fasteners.
- Cleaning: rinse with fresh water quarterly (monthly within 1 km of surf) to remove salt; avoid abrasive pads on printed faces.
Delivery, inspection and repair
Deliver
- Packed in recyclable cartons with corner protectors; larger runs ship on pallet with interleave sheets to protect faces.
- Each sign is labelled on the back with job ID, material, thickness, and a QR code for easy re‑order.
- Standard fixings (if ordered) are bagged and tagged per location to speed installation.
- Transit protection: face‑to‑face panels are interleaved; bundled hardware is isolated to prevent rub‑through.
Inspect
- On receipt, check counts against the packing list and inspect faces under good light. Minor swirls from protective film wipe off with isopropyl alcohol.
- Verify hole patterns against your site drawings before mobilising to site. Our tolerance is ±0.5 mm finished size / ±0.3 mm hole centre.
- Store panels flat on a clean surface; do not lean large ACP panels against corners to avoid edge bruising.
- Acclimatise adhesive‑mounted installs to ambient temperature before fitting to maximise bond strength.
Repair and upkeep
- Surface scuffs: polish light marks with a soft microfibre and mild detergent; for solid aluminium with clear, use non‑abrasive automotive polish only.
- Printed face damage: small chips or graffiti can be spot‑repaired with compatible clear/anti‑graffiti coatings; reflective films can be patch‑repaired.
- Edge damage: ACP corners that are crushed should be replaced. Solid aluminium edges can often be lightly dressed and de‑burred.
- Hardware: replace rusted or seized fasteners with 316 stainless and apply anti‑seize; re‑fit with isolation washers in coastal sites.
- Reprints: quote your job ID/QR code—our archive workflow reproduces artwork, hole maps and router paths for consistent replacements.
Fixings, surfaces and site conditions
Match fixings to the mounting surface: masonry anchors for brick or concrete, appropriate screws and plugs for plasterboard with noggins or backing boards, and stainless hardware for coastal or industrial environments. Use wide washers where you need to spread load on fences or thin sheet substrates.
For adhesive installation, ensure surfaces are clean, dry and firm. High‑bond tapes and structural adhesives work best with firm pressure and adequate cure time. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
- Recommended tapes/adhesives (guide): 3M VHB 5952 or 4991 on smooth, sealed substrates; structural polyurethane for rough masonry with mechanical support while curing.
- Bond prep: degrease with isopropyl alcohol, abrade glossy paint lightly, and apply consistent pressure (roller or hand) to activate VHB.
Artwork and ordering tips
For the sharpest results, supply vector artwork (PDF, AI or EPS) with curves outlined. Provide bleed for full‑bleed designs and keep critical text inside a safe margin. If you need matching reprints, note any version codes on the artwork or ask us to set up customer‑specific catalogues for repeat ordering.
