In warehouses and logistics hubs, floor graphics do more than look neat — they organise traffic, separate pedestrians, highlight hazards and reinforce 5S/lean workflows. Two common options are rigid floor signs and flexible floor decals. Both can carry icons, colour codes and wayfinding, but they behave very differently under forklifts, pallet jacks and frequent cleaning. What they are

There are two main approaches to marking on warehouse floors. Rigid floor signs are hard discs or plates made from durable substrates and fixed in place. Typical use cases

Rigid floor signs thrive where locations rarely move: emergency egress markers, permanent hazard zones, load limit reminders at fixed bays, and machine exclusion zones. Their robustness helps them survive daily scrubbing and turning traffic.

Floor decals excel where you reconfigure often: temporary pedestrian lanes, staging areas, seasonal pick zones, or short-term safety campaigns. Their low profile and fast application make them ideal for roll-outs across large sites.

Durability and wear

Wear in warehouses is dominated by three forces: rolling load, turning shear and cleaning abrasion. Rigid signs resist point impacts and distribute load better, so they often show slower edge fray. Decals are extremely durable on smooth, sealed floors, but repeated pivot turns can scuff edges faster if the substrate is rough or dusty.

Cleaning regimes matter. Aggressive brush heads, harsh chemicals or hot water pressure can accelerate wear on both types. A textured, hard-wearing top surface is essential for longevity and slip performance. Typical total build thickness for decals is 300–350 µm (100–150 µm print film + 150–200 µm textured overlaminate). Rigid discs commonly sit 2–5 mm above the floor; a 30–45° bevel helps reduce edge strike from pallet jacks.

From our field data across transport and 3PL sites, decals on sealed, smooth epoxy typically last 12–24 months in mixed foot/pallet-jack traffic; rigid discs in pivot zones commonly exceed 36 months when correctly bevelled and bonded.

Slip resistance

For pedestrian zones, a textured walking surface is critical. Rigid signs typically use a textured clear finish, while decals rely on a purpose-made, textured overlaminate. Both approaches aim to provide grip even when dusty or lightly wet from cleaning.

We specify finishes to AS 4586 (wet pendulum). Our most-used combinations deliver P4 on sealed concrete; higher-aggression textures are available up to P5 for wet or contaminated areas. Adhesion and installation

Successful installs start with surface preparation. Both options need clean, dry and sealed floors. Degrease, remove dust and allow adequate dry time after any washdown. Porous or powdery concrete will undermine adhesion.

Decals are squeegee-applied, working from centre to edge to expel air. Rigid signs are placed onto wet- or dry-applied adhesive tapes or structural adhesives, depending on substrate and environment. Avoid traffic until adhesives fully cure.

  • Tools: lint-free cloths, degreaser, pH-neutral rinse, heat gun (low) for decal conforming, felt-edge squeegee, hand roller, masking tape for hinge method.

Floor preparation and inspection checklist

  • Moisture: concrete moisture content within manufacturer limits; no visible damp. After washdown, allow at least 12–24 hours dry time.
  • Surface temperature: 10–35°C at install; avoid cold slabs that cause condensation.
  • Cleanliness: degrease, rinse, dry; dust-vacuum immediately prior to install. No silicate curing residues.
  • Seal status: sealed/epoxy-coated preferred. If unsealed or powdery, apply a compatible sealer first.
  • Texture: smooth to light orange-peel is ideal. Heavy brooms or anti-slip aggregates require a small-area adhesion test.
  • Adhesion test: apply a 50 × 50 mm sample; roll down firmly; after 24 hours, attempt lift. If edges release easily, improve prep or select rigid signs.
  • Layout: dry-fit and mark centres, confirm sight lines and minimum clearances from door sweeps and drains.
  • Traffic control: isolate area and allow adhesive/laminate to settle (typically 24 hours before heavy traffic).
  • Documentation: photograph installs and record location IDs to streamline future maintenance or replacements.
  • Dew point: verify substrate temperature is at least 3°C above dew point to prevent condensation under graphics.
  • pH check: after chemical cleaning, ensure the floor rinses neutral (pH ~7) before installation.
  • Acclimatisation: store decals and rigid discs flat in the install area for 12–24 hours at 18–25°C before application.

Floor compatibility

Performance depends on the floor surface and condition. Smooth, sealed concrete or epoxy coatings suit both products. Rough broom finishes, anti-slip aggregates or heavily cracked slabs are challenging for decals because edges cannot seal cleanly against peaks and dust.
