• Substrate type: Sealed concrete and epoxy coatings generally provide reliable adhesion. Porous, dusty or friable concrete needs sealing or priming.
• Contamination: Oils, release agents, silicone and fine dust severely reduce adhesion. Degreasing and thorough mechanical cleaning are essential.
• Texture: Very rough or broom-finished concrete reduces contact area. High-tack films or painted stencils may be a better option.
• Moisture and temperature: Install in dry, mild conditions. Cold, damp slabs slow adhesive wet-out.

When in doubt, trial a small test decal in the worst area for 48–72 hours before committing to a full rollout.

• No active leaks, washdowns or rain tracking through the work area during install and first 24–48 hours.

• Expansion joints, drains and flaky coatings identified so edges can be offset.
• Access and exclusion set up: cones/barriers and a brief traffic hold for install/initial bond.
• Small adhesion test panel installed and checked after 48–72 hours in the worst area.
• Tools on hand: lint-free cloths, IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) 70%+, plastic squeegee with felt edge, hard J-roller, heat gun, edge sealer (if specified).
• Waste plan for liner offcuts and any lifted tape/paint (bag and bin appropriately).

Installation steps for adhesive decals

Most facilities can install decals with basic tools. For large rollouts, consider using a professional installer for consistency and speed.

Tools: Neutral detergent and auto-scrubber or mop, lint-free cloths, 70%+ IPA, plastic squeegee with felt edge, hard J-roller, measuring tape, chalk line, masking tape, heat gun (for cold days), edge sealer (wet-cleaned areas), utility knife.

1. Plan the layout: Dry-fit pieces to confirm spacing, alignment and orientation for approach traffic.
2. Clean thoroughly: Degrease, rinse and dry the floor. Mechanically remove loose paint or laitance. Vacuum dust.
3. Test adhesion: Apply a small test piece on the worst area. Check bond after 1–3 days.
4. Apply graphics: Peel backing gradually, squeegee from centre out to avoid bubbles. Maintain firm, overlapping strokes.
5. Post-roll: Use a hard roller to activate adhesive, especially at edges and corners.
6. Edge sealing (if needed): In wet-cleaned areas or outdoors, seal edges to reduce water ingress and lift.
7. Cure time: Keep heavy traffic off briefly to let the adhesive wet-out.

Maintenance and longevity

Visibility, not perfection, is the goal. A practical maintenance approach keeps messages readable and boundaries respected.

• Cleaning: Use non-aggressive cleaners and soft pads. Avoid harsh solvents and aggressive scrubbing on edges.
• Inspection: Add floor graphics to your safety walk-through checklist. Look for edge lift, scuffing and fading.
• Touch-ups and replacement: Replace the message panels first; keep painted borders or hatch if still serviceable.
• Operational wear: Expect faster wear where forklifts pivot. Consider moving turning points or adding protective hardware.

For auto-scrubbers, run neutral pH detergents (pH 7–8) and white or red pads; avoid black/stripping pads. Reduce water flow over edges to minimise ingress.

Repair and refurbishment

• Edge re-bond: Warm lifted edges gently with a heat gun, clean the underside with IPA, apply a light coat of adhesion promoter at the floor edge (e.g. primer as specified), press down and post-roll. Finish with an edge sealer in washdown zones.
• Panel patch: For gouges or torn areas, trim a clean rectangle around the damage, clean and dry, then install a new piece with 10–15 mm overlap on all sides. Round patch corners to reduce lift.
• Full panel swap: To remove, warm the graphic, lift with a plastic scraper, and use a citrus-based adhesive remover on residue. Neutralise with detergent, rinse, dry, then install the replacement.
• Painted zones: Clean, abrade lightly where worn, mask and recoat per the paint system’s data sheet. Use your original Sign Portal stencil set to keep typography and arrowheads identical.

• High UV exposure: Outdoor aprons benefit from UV-stable inks and protective laminates. Edge sealing helps in weather-exposed areas.
• Coastal sites: Salt and fine grit accelerate abrasion—schedule more frequent inspections and cleaning.
• Tropical humidity: Keep the substrate dry during installation; trapped moisture reduces initial bond.
• Mining and heavy industry: Consider painted hatch zones with decals for text to balance durability and clarity.

Sizing and layout guidance

Scale markings to the approach speed and viewing distance. Keep wording concise and reinforce with arrows or chevrons that guide movement in or away from the opening. Use a clear border or contrasting field so the message doesn’t visually blend into the slab.

• Use consistent typography and arrow styles across the site.
• Keep borders away from expansion joints or floor drains to avoid edge lift.
• For wide roller doors, repeat the message to maintain legibility across the span.

Compliance and slip resistance

We specify anti-slip overlaminates to target AS 4586 (Wet Pendulum) classifications appropriate for pedestrian areas when new. Typical results for our textured overlaminates on sealed concrete are P4 (mean BPN 35–44) and, where required, P5 (≥45 BPN) using Slider 96 in laboratory testing. Independent AS 4586 test reports are available on request. On site, maintain cleanliness to preserve in-service slip resistance.
